update: Project get a job

I am working on a very exciting project, I have a field that I want to work in and the prospect of being surrounded by inovation and design sounds very appealing. So I am dedicating my summer to this little project of mine.

I have done some research on companies here in Melbourne and from that I have gone from not knowing where to go to having a list of possible companies to approach. I found this inforamtion by searching competitions won and from that i found websites and blogs. currently reading up on what is going on in melbourne so I have a better idea what they design companies are heading. which will be useful.

I am just starting out and want to cover all my bases when it comes to presenting myself.  I enjoy having a blog. but also see that I need to have a simple online cv, that not only shows my work but is presented in a way that is both unique to me and sophisticated. So for that I will use the lime green in the design, have a slideshow of my work. and scroll down for about, projects.

Typeface research. This is something I have been told when submitting assignments at uni to focus on and spend more time picking better fonts. So I been doing just that, understanding how to make them more appealing, which fonts to use, how best to adjust sizes, kerning.  helpful.

To do all this requres, money, time and a good support network. The cost of the website… which i am kicking myself for calling it tbrewsterdesigns.blog… where now I know it would be neater if it was called travisbrewsterdesign.com. but it is all learning and may not be a big deal in the end.

Money as I  will need to fund my resarch slash job hunting time. so I have put some money aside to keep me alive while I do that.

And lastly I good support network makes a big difference, it helps when the people around you want you to sucessed. I have a place to stay, food, people willing to look over my cv and cretique my portfolio. All these things are helpful.

What does bottled water say about you?

I stumbled across this while on YouTube and looked into it it is interesting how objects can affect our perception of people. The study was based in on a thing called the room effect where a person photographed in different rooms effect our perception about them. Below is the abstract and conclusion from the thesis. And the original youtube video I saw about the PHD study.

” The research in this paper tested the product effect, a method that investigates
how consumers perceive a person’s appearance and character traits based on
the symbolic values of the products they own.
The method was based on the room effect, a method used in environmental
psychology to study how the context of different rooms affects an observer’s
perception of an occupant’s personality. Adapting the method to study how the
symbolic values of products affect perceptions of personality, this study showed
photographs of a male and female model with two differently designed bottled
water packages. The photographs and a set of semantic differential scale
questions about the model’s personality were shown in a paper-based pilot
questionnaire and two online questionnaires administered through the
Swinburne University website.” page i, from the abstract of the thesis.

“The results indicate that a product effect exists, although it is by no means a
simple effect. It seems to be influenced, among other things, by nationality of
respondents, and the age and gender of the person being judged. However,
the detection of a bottle effect, despite these other influential factors, indicates
that the method is effective for examining the effects of bottled water packaging
on person perception. If something as innocuous as a bottle can elicit changes
in perceptions of personality, detecting the effects of other products is plausible.” page 287 from the conclusion of the thesis.

JOB HUNTING

Today I have start my new job title “To find a job”. I first came across this notion when I was looking for work a few years back. To treat job hunting like full time work, and today I start that. What will it entail? 5 days a week from 8.30 until 2pm, pack a lunch, head off to a work location. In this case I chose my university library, as I have access to it and it has all the resources to help me find a job. Set up at a computer with programs to prepare my portfolio. And a few design books to get ideas.

Gantt chart first month

Task Week 1&2 Week 3& 4 Week 5&6
Prepare portfolio

–          Research layout ideas

–          Create mock up design

–          Detail page 1 spread

–          Detail page 2 spread

–          Detail page 3 spread

–          Detail page 4 spread

–          Email portfolio to Eggbox, Swinburne teachers, Facebook network, linked in

–          Collect a list of design businesses in Melbourne. Alter portfolio to suit businesses.

–          Get involved in groups, forums, spaces where I can start a conversation with people in the industry face to face

I assume that it will take a while the usual job searching time is 3 months. And it is currently the xmas period where most businesses will be winding down or going on holidays so this will give me time to update my portfolio.

Planning portfolio

Here is how I have planned my portfolio. Using images from the net and one of my own. I am looking at a nice concise way to show a lot of information simply. From sketches, to technical drawings, to 3D renderings, to a final design image in a setting.

I have completed a flat pack furniture piece and planning out where things would go. The first row shows the flow with all the information on the page. The second row shows what I want to be highlighted and read clearly, the chair at each stage, tile and description paragraph. The last row shows it all together, the background images, the foreground images.

Flat Pack Furniture Range

travisbrewsterdesign Flat pack furniture range. I made full scale cardboard models, laser cut miniatures, 3d sketched in solidworks CAD, before lastly having the seat cut with a CNC router in 17mm ply. A light sand and it fit like a glove. A lot of work but was worth it to have a final piece that was functional. I would like to make the shelving unit over the summer.

My experience with Keyshots 7 the design rendering program.

Today I have signed up to download a 14 day free trial of key shots. I was referred to keyshots after rendering my designs in solidwork. Keyshots is a rendering program that is great for rendering product designs.

I will update my results as I go and experiment with this new program.

it took a few goes to download, I think that having other processes and programs open wa effecting its downloading, so I closed them all and clicked download. It took around 1 hour for the whole program to download.

I was unable to open keyshots 7 I read a few forums but was unable to solve the problem. I have also downloaded an older version of keyshots, keyshots 6 and that had trouble opening also.

Project: Phone and App design

Today I have spend all of today refining a project that I had submitted last night. using photoshop and illustrator design programs. below are pdf’s that can be opened up and viewed.

RATIONALE

This projects was a collaboration between Swinburne University in Melbourne and UMK in Malaysia. The brief was to create a gift for dignitaries that is focused on either Australia or Malaysia. Aspect that were to be included, the product and packaging must contain bamboo and rattan and have a sustainable life.

The phone concept is based on a product that will be a high end unisex gift that will be gifted at the 2018 commonwealth games and have a useful life in Australia or Malaysia as it is compatible with both countries sim cards. The phone will be made from recycled and sustainable materials, the packaging will be made from mushroom which is easily biodegradable. The app is developed to keep track of events and metal tally during the game. This gift is unisex, will have a useful life as a phone after the games, the phone will be compatible with both Australian and Malaysian sim card.

Aspects of the design that were taken into consideration:

  • To be related to the 2018 gold coast commonwealth game where it will be presented to a dignitary
  • To have a useful life after the games
  • To be unisex so it can be presented for both male and female dignitaries
  • Can be used in Australia and Malaysia
  • Made from Biodegradable and recycled materials, including bamboo and rattan

The phone:

Mushroom battery instead of the current graphite that is used in lithium ion batteries and need harmful chemicals to use. Whereas, the mushroom as it ages and becomes more porus it will increase the battery life. (sciencealert.com)

The packaging:

Mushroom box with a rattan band holding it together and a bamboo card, and recycled leaflet detailing the elements of how it was made. (inhabitat.com). Mushroom packaging that is less harmful on the environment.

Sustainably sourced dignitary gift project

maylaysia phone concept jpegFor the past few weeks I have been working on a collaborative concept project partnered with a university in Malaysia. The brief was to design a sustainable gift to give to dignitaries and an event, the gift must have elements of bamboo and rattan as these are elements common in Malaysia.

My partner – Muhamad suggested that we focus on the 2018 Commonwealth games in Queensland next year. and from that I have been working on product design ideas while Muhamad will work on the packaging.

Concept proposal: Gift ideas to give to dignitaries at the Commonwealth games in Queensland next year. Looking at what materials and colours could be used in the design, we already have to include both bamboo and rattan, though we can also include gold, silver and bronze to keep it inline with the Commonwealth games. Designing a phone with Rattan back cover and an app that lists events that are running, metal tally.

Today I worked on projects

Today I worked on two projects the solidowrks vacuum cleaner and also pot plant stand flat pack. Each solidworks session usually takes about 2 hours and and working on the flat pack has taken 3 hours. So all up I have worked 5 hours on projects.

Tomorrow morning in the workshop at university I will be able to cut out the design that I have drawn up and measured 1 to 1. I hope that it works out. I would like to finish this design tomorrow.

Finding the best layout for me

I like to write and blog and think that is where most of my style is though I want to have a clean overview display of all of my works in images on the home/about screen.

Any ideas fellow bloggers?

Pot plant stand

I am working on a flat pack set to be cut in the CNC machine in a few weeks. The set is for a ‘Reading nook’ consisting of a chair, a pot plant stand and a side table. Below is the Pot plant stand drawn in Solidoworks.

Wednesday study session

Objective: attempt 08 at the vacuum sketch

Today I am focusing on drawing the basic shapes for the vacuum cleaner. Getting myself familiar with the tools and functions in the soildworks program. It has started of to a slow start. Though I found this time around it was much easier building the part. Each time I attempt this project I have gained insight from my previous attempts and I am able to complete the drawing faster.

setting a black slate to focus

I have been falling behind with projects lately, due to social commitments, lack of cash and other things. So I set aside some money and cancelled all my plans to focus on projects and what I could to. I realized that I was not giving enough time to projects. And having a designated budget to get projects made and photographed took of some of the pressure

Making Flat pack furniture

For a flat pack furniture project I created this out of 1300x500mm of cardboard from a sketches building a 1 to 1 scale model. Then in adobe illustrator drew up a file for laser cutting 5mm ply wood.

I am happy with the result though I would like to make a few improvements and adjustments.
